Bold claim first: this is a turning point for Bangladesh, as Tarique Rahman positions the rule of law and national unity at the heart of a new administration’s plan. He frames the victory not as a personal win but as a win for the people and for democracy, and he outlines a careful, multi-faceted path to rebuilding the country after a hard-fought election.
In a post-election address to journalists at a Dhaka hotel, Rahman emphasized that the victory belongs to the people, democracy, and those who sacrificed for democratic values. He asserted that from this moment, true freedom and rights are being restored, and he called for unity and responsible political conduct across the board.
A clear message about unity and responsible politics
Rahman urged all political parties to unite in the national interest and warned that internal divisions could erode democracy. He acknowledged that parties may have different perspectives, but stressed that collective national strength comes from unity while division weakens the system. He noted that 51 parties participated in the election, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the NCP, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, and Gono Odhikar Parishad, and he congratulated all participants regardless of the outcome.
He described democracy as a beacon that relies on responsible behavior from both government and opposition to help democracy mature into solid institutions.
Facing challenges ahead
Rahman described the immediate environment as fragile: an economy in strain, institutions weakened, and law-and-order problems left by a previous regime. Yet he celebrated the moment when a parliament and a people’s government, elected directly by citizens, are reestablished after more than 15 years. He reiterated the BNP’s 31-point reform agenda and committed to implementing promises gradually.
Gratitude toward institutions and stakeholders
He expressed thanks to the interim government, the Election Commission, administrative personnel, armed forces, law enforcement agencies, and election officials for delivering a free, fair, and credible vote. He also acknowledged the vital role played by domestic and international media and observers in reinforcing electoral integrity.
Tribute to those who paved the path and to Khaleda Zia
Reflecting on the country’s political struggles—from 1971 to the 2024 mass movements—Rahman paid tribute to those who were killed or injured in the fight for democracy. He remembered former prime minister Khaleda Zia, noting that her absence cast a heavy shadow even in victory, and lauded her lifelong stand against fascism.
A call for calm and restraint after the vote
Rahman urged BNP leaders and supporters nationwide to avoid post-election violence or unrest. He instructed members not to stage victory processions despite the landslide result, underscoring that peace and order must prevail at any cost and that unlawful acts would not be tolerated. He also condemned violence by any side against others, regardless of political or religious identity.
Commitment to rule of law and national reconstruction
Justice and the rule of law, Rahman said, would guide the new government’s approach. He stressed that the rule of law must apply equally to all citizens, and he asked citizens to join in the fight against corruption, to uphold law and order, and to demand accountability so Bangladesh can become a safe, humane, and democratic nation.

As he closed, Rahman called for solidarity across political lines and perspectives to move toward a secure, humane, and democratic Bangladesh. He extended appreciation to democratic forces worldwide and to expatriate Bangladeshis, signaling a broader, inclusive effort to build the nation’s future.
