Geraldine 'Gerry' MacKay, a beloved member of the New Glasgow community, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, at the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit after a brief illness. Born in Amherst, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Jean (Smith) Weldon. Gerry's life was a testament to her compassion and dedication to her family and community.
Gerry's journey began at the Aberdeen School of Nursing, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1964. Her career was marked by a brief stint at the Moncton Hospital and a long, dedicated service at the Aberdeen Hospital in the Maternity/Pediatric Ward. Gerry's love for her family was evident in her many roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, and frequent babysitter. She found solace and joy in spending time at the family cottage at Lochaber Lake with Tom and the rest of her loved ones, creating cherished memories.
Gerry was an artist at heart, with a passion for painting, tole painting, and crafting. She was often called upon to sew for her family, offering her skills and time selflessly. Her baking skills were legendary, especially during the holidays, and her family always looked forward to her delicious treats. Gerry's spontaneous drives with Tom, with no set destination or timing, were a source of joy and adventure for them both.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Crocket; son, Craig; grandchildren, Laura (Seth Burrill), Jamie, Jakob, and Josh; brother-in-law, Bobby (Wendy); one niece; one nephew; and numerous cousins. Gerry was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Tom, and son-in-law, Jim.
Cremation has taken place, and there will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 3, at 11 am in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow, with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Burial will be held in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Nova SPCA (https://www.novascotiaspca.ca/shelters/north-nova-shelter/), Lochaber Centre, or a charity of choice. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to all the staff of the Aberdeen Hospital who cared for her during her stay. Gerry's legacy will live on through the memories of her loved ones and the impact she had on the lives of those around her.
