Raindance Film Festival 2023: Opening with 'April X' | Sci-Fi, Thriller, and Star Power (2026)

The 34th Raindance Film Festival is set to kick off with a bang, as the festival opens with the U.K. premiere of Michel K. Parandi's sci-fi thriller, 'April X'. This marks a significant moment for the festival, which has been a champion of independent voices since its inception. The film stars Connor Storrie, known for his role in 'Heated Rivalry', and Lilly Krug, who brings her talent to the screen in 'Shattered' and 'Plane'. Storrie takes on the role of twin Bax, whose sister, April, vanishes, sending him on a psychological journey through a post-Soviet cityscape. The film has already garnered multiple awards on the international festival circuit, and its U.K. premiere is highly anticipated. Vertigo Releasing will distribute the film across the U.K. and Ireland in September, marking a significant step for the festival's programming. The opening night will also feature the first and exclusive festival screening of the Gorillaz animated short, 'The Mountain, the Moon Cave and the Sad God', directed by Jamie Hewlett, Timothy McCourt, and Jonathan Djob Nkondo. This short film accompanies the band's latest album, 'The Mountain', adding to the festival's diverse programming. The festival's closing gala will showcase Kirsty Bell's documentary, 'Eddie Cochran: Don't Forget Me', the first official biography of the rock and roll icon. The film was produced with the blessing of the Cochran family estate and traces Cochran's trajectory from country music roots to his influence on artists like the Beatles, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, and Yungblud. Cochran's legacy will be further honored with a posthumous Raindance Icon Award, which will join his other trophies at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. Bell's feature debut, 'A Bird Flew In', had its world premiere at Raindance in 2021, and the festival's commitment to emerging filmmakers is evident in its decision to open with 'April X'. The festival's full lineup will be announced on May 18, with additional highlights set to be revealed at the Cannes event on May 17. The 34th Raindance Film Festival will run from June 17 to 26 in London, offering a diverse range of films and events that celebrate independent voices and emerging talent.
