In a heartfelt and courageous act, former Major League Baseball All-Star Dickie Thon has made headlines by donating his kidney to save the life of his son, Joe Thon. Dickie Thon, who gained recognition as an MLB All-Star in 1983 while playing for the Houston Astros, put aside any concerns about potential risks associated with the surgery. His sole focus was on doing whatever it took to assist his son during a dire time. "It was a no-brainer," he expressed in an interview with MLB.com. "I made up my mind."
Joe Thon had been facing health challenges due to kidney disease since 2011, which he discovered during a routine physical examination while attending spring training. With a promising baseball career ahead of him, having been drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth round of the 2010 MLB Draft, Joe played seven seasons in the minor leagues before transitioning into coaching. However, his condition took a turn for the worse in January 2025, prompting him to consider joining a transplant list.
As the situation became urgent, Joe's family rallied around him, with each member, including his four sisters, offering to donate a kidney. Ultimately, it was his father, Dickie, who turned out to be the most compatible donor. "I didn’t even think about it," Dickie recounted. "I just felt a strong urge to do it. He has a lot of potential, and to me, that was very rewarding."
Initially, Joe felt reservations about accepting a kidney from his 67-year-old father, concerned about placing him in a difficult position. However, after some encouragement and reassurances from medical professionals regarding the procedure's safety, he agreed. "I didn’t want to put him in a tough spot, either," Joe explained. "But it was best for me and my family, too. Dad was really adamant he wanted to do it."
The successful transplant surgery took place in mid-December without any complications, leading to both Joe and Dickie being discharged from the hospital within a week. "I’m very glad I was able to help him," Dickie commented. "I’ve had a good life, and I’m not afraid of whatever happens next."
Throughout his extensive MLB career, Dickie Thon also played for several other teams, including the Angels, Phillies, Padres, Rangers, and Brewers. During his standout All-Star season in 1983, he achieved impressive statistics, hitting .286 with 20 home runs and 79 RBIs. Over 15 seasons in the league, he concluded his career with a batting average of .264, accumulating 71 home runs and 435 RBIs.
